这个原则似乎表明，我们必须相信自己有能力成功，才有可能得到某些成功。确实如此，信心原则中的知识部分就源于此，也是原则中第一个等式成立的原因。在没有任何尝试就相信我们会成功前，我们必须拥有一些知识，如成功需要什么，要有怎样的优势和能力的综合作用。另外，也必须了解“失败”的真相。

尝试了，却没能如愿达到目标结果，就不是失败。只有当我们承认达不到，并放弃尝试时，才会出现失败。事实上，只有两种方式会导致失败：在达到真正想要的目标前，你放弃了；或者继续在错误的道路上前进，因为，你最初作出的选择是错误的，但你仍执拗地坚持。
