NomanthihanIdoofthepatriotism,aswellasabilities,oftheverywentlemeaddressedtheHouse。Butdiffereehesamesubjedifferentlights;and,therefore,IhopethatitwilldisrespectfultothosegentlemeainingasIdo,opinionsofacharacterveryoppositetotheirs,Ishallspeakforthmysesfreelyandwithoutreserve。Thisisnotimefory。ThequestioheHouseisoneofawfulmomenttothistry。FormyownpartIsideritashaionoffreedomorslavery;andinproportioudeofthesubjectoughttobethefreedomofthedebate。Itisonlyinthiswaythatetoarriveattruth,andfulfillthegreatresponsibilitywhichweholdtoGodandourtry。ShouldIkeepbaionsatsuchatime,thrivingoffence,Ishouldyselfasguiltyoftreasontowardsmytry,andofanactofdisloyaltytowardsthemajestyofheaven,whichIrevereaboveallearthlykings。
Mr。President,itisnaturaltomantoiheillusionsofhope。ttainstapainfultruth,ahesongofthatSiren,tillshetransformsusis。Isthisthepartofwisemen,engagediandarduleforliberty?Arewedisposedtobeofthehosewho,havi,andhavingears,hearhingswhiearlytheirtemporalsalvation?Formypart,whateveranguishofspirititmaywillingtokruth;tokandtoprovideforit。
